| | Statement of Purpose
Church Folks for a Better America has been established as an online initiative for peace. It hopes to break the silence about the war in Iraq that is still too widespread in our country -- not least in our churches. It believes that without new priorities in our nation's foreign and military policy, a safer world and a better America will not be reached.
To that end it promotes The Dove Ad Project and posts supporting materials. Our goal is to raise enough money to publish The Dove Ad in at least one major metropolitan newspaper, and elsewhere as funds allow. All contributions are tax- deductible.
Update. As of August 15 we have raised enough money to place The Dove Ad in several religious periodicals in September. We hope this step will help us toward our larger goal of getting the ad into a major newspaper.
The project rests on two basic convictions. First that more and more church people, across the political spectrum, are concerned about the war, supporting an early end to the continuing U.S. military presence. Second that they would concur with these words from Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.: A time comes when silence is betrayal. [People] do not easily assume the task of opposing their government's policy, especially in time of war. We must speak with all the humility that is appropriate to our limited vision, but we must speak. For we are deeply in need of a new way beyond the darkness so close around us. We are called upon to speak for the weak, for the voiceless, for the victims of our nation, for those it calls "enemy," for no document from human hands can make these humans any less our brothers and sisters.
